Holiday for connoisseurs

Where do architects go on holiday? Those who turn the most beautiful dream homes into reality every day will surely not want to find themselves in a loveless dosshouse or an ikea-ised chain hotel. That is what Mira Thal and Michael Buchleitner thought too. The architect couple created the refined Ferienlofts „See 31“on the shore of Lake Traunsee (A) and shares it with other holidaymakers.

A gently sloping meadow. Adorned with fruit trees and flowers. Beyond it the shimmering lake and the mighty Traunstein. What more do you need for a sense of well-being? That's right: accommodation. Because even the nicest day comes to an end at some point. And although lightening at night, thick storm clouds, rain or snow make an impressive sight, they are best viewed from a safe hideaway. Mira Thal and Michael Buchleitner from the Lakonis architectural firm in Vienna have built just such a retreat in the hillside: two reduced, unobtrusive cuboids, which bring the experience of nature to the guest thanks to their sensitive design. Because the generous windows allow you to gaze unhindered into the distance and the loving use of natural materials practically brings the forest and fields into the building.

WHITE AND BROWN

Sleek, refined larch wood surrounds the holidaymakers and the furnishing is reduced to the essential. The overall effect is harmonious, organic, warm and inviting. The joiner responsible, Tischlerei Loidhammer, from Bad Ischl, the water stain ADLER Aqua-Colora – which provides a fine, whitish shimmer – and ADLER PUR-Naturmatt – which makes the surfaces look untreated, yet gives them the best protection against signs of wear – proved just the right combination. After all, not only the architects want to live here, but so do other recreation seekers in between. Simultaneously slipping into the role of planner and owner was an exciting opportunity for the pair. “The experiences gained as a client heightens the perception of the architect couple better than any coaching,” Thal and Buchleitner are convinced.

GREY IN GREEN

The positioning of the two holiday lofts with one or two accommodation units bears reference to the traditional scattered settlements in the region. And like the old barns and lodges, the two cuboids, with their naturally weathered looking wood facades, merge into the rural surroundings. This is made possible by Pullex Silverwood von ADLER. The greying glaze ensures a uniform, durably attractive finish in an Alpine, yet at the same time, modern style. “It was particularly important to us to reflect the natural properties of the wood – that was possible with the product from ADLER,” the architects also stress. The patio areas in front of the lofts invite you to relax among nature. And for those who prefer to rest on Lake Traunsee itself, the bathing area is only a few steps away.
